RECENT EVENT UPDATE: 23rd Annual PATH Conference - The Clarion Dublin Hotel:

The 23rd annual PATH conference in Dublin was a huge success with over 100 delegates attending from industry and education, with Europe and the USA represented strongly this year. The conference theme was about thefuture of work placements and there was lively debate and discussion about the role of work experience in helping build the future workforce in hospitality and tourism.

The opening address by Aidan Pender, Director - Policy & Industry Development, Failte Ireland, addressed the wider economic issues about workforce productivity and presented some key challenges to be tackled by education and employers to ensure work experience fulfilled its role in developing the skills required for the industry in 21st Century.

Brian Wisdom, CEO of People 1st, also presented some very interesting and thought provoking data on the skills needs of industry and he proposed how education and employers should be working with the Sector Skills Council to promote skills development and build workforce capacity. Presentations from Shannon College Ireland, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the Higher Education Academy complimented industry contributions from Malmaison, D&D London, LearnPurple, Chess Partnership, HRC International and IST Plus. A very big thank you also to our students representatives sponsored to attend by CHME; Ben McEwen from Oxford Brookes and Liz Hardman from MMU; and also to the graduate from DTI, Deidre Prendergast, who is now Marketing Manager at Four Seasons Dublin. They gave the conference food for thought in relaying their experiences (the good and the bad!) of work placement.

Next years conference will be held on 11th & 12th of June (venue and title to be confirmed) so do put the dates in your diary.
